MoonChild Vintage Does Handmade Tapestry Banners!

Happy Autumn everyone!

Over the summer I have slowly been making these handmade Tapestry style Banners for the shop. They are inspired by old art quilts and handmade fabric signs and banners. I have been making them for myself and friends for a few years and the ones hanging in my house always gets so many compliments I decided to make some to sell. The main idea behind them is to have something colorful hanging in your home with sayings that inspire and remind one of life's mysteries, joys and magic! They also work as curtains and outdoor banners for your yard or garden. I can also do custom made ones if you have something you would like one to say or some color scheme. if you want one custom made please contact me at my Etsy shop for further discussion (see side bar on my blog). The Love I have for Vintage Laura Ashley~

When I was a kid growing up I loved going into the Laura Ashley store we had in my hometown of Houston, Texas. Everything was so beautiful from the clothes to the house ware. I remember when I was 12 my Mom finally bought me a bed room set of sheets, curtains and pillows for my room and I was so happy I would just lay on my bed smiling. It evoked another time and place for me, like being transported back in time to a Jane Austen novel or something of that nature. When I got to high school I was into punk and new wave, but my girlfriends and I became obsessed with Laura Ashley and started wearing her dresses with crazy hair and makeup and old victorian granny boots and 1940's shoes. It was like old west prairie girls go punk!

Laura Ashley herself was a welsh fashion designer and got her start designing designed headscarves, napkins, table mats and tea-towels for the Women's Institute on quilt work, which her husband Bernard printed on a machine he had designed in their attic flat. Laura's inspiration to start producing printed fabric came from a Women's Institute display of traditional handicrafts at the Victoria & Albert Museum. When she began looking for small patches carrying Victorian designs to help her make patchworks, she found no such thing existed. Here was her opportunity, and she started to print Victorian style headscarves in 1953. The Ashleys' scarves quickly became successful with stores, retailing both via mail order and high street chains such as John Lewis - Bernard left his city job to print fabrics full time. This put them on the road to becoming an international company with a brand that is recognized around the globe. Laura designed the prints and Bernard built the printing equipment; Laura remained in charge of design until shortly before her death, while Bernard handled the operational side. Laura Ashley's first shop was opened in Machynlleth, Powys (35 Maengwyn Street) in London.

I Have never really been a collector of one thing in particular but today I have the sudden urge to start collecting vintage Laura Ashley. Maybe some of these designs below will inspire some of you to start your own Laura Ashley Collections.

I am definitely a cat lady! I just adore the cat and am constantly amazed by their special spirits and behavior. My own cat is a year old Black domestic named Kiki Pamplemousse Fontaine and she fills my days with love, happiness, spirit and laughter and teaches how to really meditate on life. I love watching her as well as any cat I come across actually. I have had a few cats in my day and they are still with me each day and their spirits live on in my life and always will as they gave me a love that is beyond words. They are truly noble beings. I was looking up cats in art and came across some fun and interesting pictures. For all of the cat lovers out there I hope these make you smile.

I got turned on to Linda Perhacs while driving in the car with my friend, the amazing singer/musician/songwriter Paula Frazer (check her out as well, the most amazing voice you will ever hear!) and I was completely blown away by her song writing and voice. It reminded me of a stranger almost more pure Joni Mitchell and definitely with a weirder vibe as well, which is always a plus for me~Anyhoo, I hope the weekend treats everyone with kindness and a dose of magic!

My New Album~ the Diary of Ic Explura: Daughter of the Flood

For the last 10 years I have been working on a project called The Diary of Ic Explura. It started with a story book I wrote first called A Love Letter to the Transformer: the Diary of Ic Explura which is a fantasy piece told through letters, drawings, painting, collage, photos, poetry and prose. After I had finished that I decided to put the whole piece to music and 5 years ago I put out Part One which is Title A Love Letter to the Transformer, which I recorded with a friend of mine Josh Klinghoffer. Since then I have been busy with so many different other things I had a hard time getting back to the project to finish Part Two, but over the last year and a half I recorded Part Two with my boyfriend Max Davies and guest musicians Pete Newsom, Hagan Caldwell and Roberta Davies. It is now available for sale on my Bandcamp page! Yay!!

My shop on Etsy, Moonchild Vintage, belongs to an Esty Team that recently held a contest where everyone was asked to either make, or in the case of vintage shops pick a piece inspired by one of your all time favorite songs and then photograph it with that in mind as well. I chose the Bjork song UNRAVEL which is on her album Homogenic and I won for my listing! I don;t think I have ever won anything! One of the most interesting visual artist of the Beat era, Wallace Berman (1926-1976) remains, for me, one of the best kept secrets of the late twentieth century. A crucial figure in California's postwar underground, Berman was a catalyst who traveled through many different worlds, transferring ideas and dreams from one circle to the next. His publication called Semina, a loose-leaf art and poetry journal that Berman published and personally distributed in nine issues occupies a legendary place within the California art world as the club for those in the know. An experiment in private, improvised art distributed among friends, Semina can be compared to the fascicles and letters of Emily Dickinson a century earlier; both Dickinson and Berman sought through their hand-made, private creations—often sent out as “mail art”—to coalesce a community that was at odds with the official world. Within the charmed circle of the Semina coterie, distinctions between literature and art collapsed: poets drew and made collages; artists and filmmakers wrote poems. Speaking for Berman, his wife Shirley asserts that he published Semina “because he loved poetry so much”. “We spent a lot of time reading poetry,” she recalls, insisting that poetry was a more fecund source of inspiration for Berman than two other art forms he adored, music and film: “His working process was to read poetry, all the new young poets”

Semina was an unbound journal printed on a hand press in editions of a few hundred and mailed to friends ‘like a surprise communication from an erratic correspondent’. Each installment of Semina consisted of loose-leaf pages of different sizes and shapes and featured works by dozens of the artists and poets who passed through Berman’s bungalow on Crater Lane, a loosely defined scene that included Bruce Conner, Jay DeFeo, Jack Hirschman, Joan Brown, Jess, Allen Ginsberg, Diane di Prima, Dean Stockwell, Dennis Hopper, Taylor Mead, Jack Smith, Walter Hopps, William Burroughs and many more.

I have included photos to get a feel of what an interesting and wonderful thing Semina culture truly was and it takes me back in time to a place where artist truly made art for arts sake as opposed to the drive for money and fame. Every photo and piece of poetry and art work inspires so much in me, mainly a sense of the magic in ordinary life and the simple style of working with what you have as we are all so full of our own magic as are the things around us.

NELLIE

After his shouts, the strops, her screams, the thrown things,
the doorslam, the bitter weeping,
out of the thin box, as the delicate paper was parted,
she'd lift the sheer mojud stockings
and run her fingertips along them,
slowly smiling girlishly again.

She'd begin singing a Perry Como song,
she loved Perry Como and would sing
the same song he sang, all day long,
on the Make-Believe Ballroom Time.

Then, in a black brassiere strapped to her freckled shoulders,
she'd sit on the bed, fit the stockings,
stand up and notch them to the garters
that hung down from her black girdle,
A ripple of fat ran round her waist, squeezed out
by the girdle, different from
the plumps that swelled out from her brassiere.
And I saw a blue bruise, the shadow
of a belt-buckle on her thigh.

But she was singing again, and over the girdle
she'd put on a pair of pink bloomers,
and over everything, then,a brown-and-white flower-print
summer-golden dress.

Her white heels had holes in the toes where her nail-polish
showed through. The bottle of polish, tweezers, lipstick,
rouge, brush and emeryboard were on the vanity table
over there looking in the mirror.

Her lips swam in the Como song with rose-red strokes,
reaching the end with a shiny glow,
like the waxy cameo of her mother
on the brooch in the drawer.

She'd hold out her hand and say, "Come, darling?"

We'd walk hand in hand up and down our street
in the twilight,
and the neighbors would cry out: "Hi, Nellie!" or "Hello,
Mrs. Hirschman," and "Hi, Jackie. My, how you've grown!"

Wonderful new stuff in the shop! I will be adding all of this stuff throughout the next couple of days along with tons of other new stuff this week and next! A theme of gypsies seems to keep appearing, along with Moroccan and Central and South American themes as well.

Here comes the harvest everyone! I am so excited about the coming autumn and all it entails with harvesting the garden, the weather turning slightly cooler, the leaves changing, Halloween, and toasty fire warmed rooms!

This past week a dear friend, the beautiful Nicole, came to visit Max and I from San Francisco and we went up to the sweet mountain towns of Nederland and Gold Hill to shoot some new stuff for the shop. The pictures turned out so lovely due to the beauty of Nicole and the vibe of the old towns and natural scenery surrounding them. In the spirit of feathers week, I have selected a vast selection of amazing headdresses which have been worn for thousands of years throughout the cultures of the world. Truly birds are the most amazing and glorious of creatures and humans have celebrated them in the making and wearing of headdresses. Inspirational Style Muses~ Anita Pallenberg

I am starting a series on women and men who have influenced my own style and continue to inspire me and wanted to start with Anita Pallenberg. My boyfriend and I just watched the new Stones Documentary a few nights ago called Stones In Exile, about the making of the their album Exile on Main Street, which they made at a villa in the south of France called Nellcote that Keith Richards and Anita Pallenberg were living in. I was so in love with all of the old and rare footage, especially of Anita lounging around the house and grounds. At this point in time most people know of the great style of Anita Pallenberg as she truly was the first great Rock N' Roll Style muse! It is impossible to calculate her influence on the fashion of today as it is just so vast! From floppy hats, wide brim fedoras, t-shirt dresses, ethnic tunics and jewelry, furs, layering multi patterns and fabrics, velvet suits and mini skirts...the list goes on and on. A modern day style icon, Kate Moss, owes pretty much everything to Anita Pallenberg and she herself continues to influence millions of women all over the world. I am not going to get into a history of Anita Pallenberg , even though she is a fascinating woman, I just want to share photos of her amazing style and hope you enjoy it as much as I do. She has the perfect ability, which I think all great style has, which is to seem as if it was so effortless and Anita has that in spades! Last Wednesday night as it poured rain and the sky was filled with lightening and the sound of thunder, my boyfriend Max and I headed down to the historical Boulderado Hotel for a bit of a fashion shoot for the shop. We met up with the beautiful and lovely Roberta Baines (visiting from Italy for a week) who would be modeling and Hagan Caldwell who would be taking the photos that evening. The Boulderado is an old victorian hotel that opened on New Year's Day in 1909 and is said to be haunted as well. It definitely has that "Shining" feeling to it, but at the same time it is a perfect place to have cocktails in the The Corner Bar or lobby as well as lunch or dinner in the dining room. Famous guest include Helen Keller, Douglas Fairbanks, Ethel Barrymore, and Louis Armstrong. We started the evening with a cocktail and then got to work with our guerilla style photo shoot, although no one seemed to mind that we were there. I suspect it was because the clothes we were prancing around in seemed to suit the decor and that probably does not happen too often these days. People kept asking if we were shooting a movie and we just laughed and smiled a lot. The evening was so much fun for all of us we stayed a while after we finished shooting sitting on the second floor mezzanine in the old victorian couchs just catching up and hearing about Roberta's new eye and sun glass design business she has just launched in Italy called Tavat. Look for those frames in the future as she had samples and they are so classy and timeless. Roberta is the sweetest girl you ever want to meet and even gave me a great pair with green frames that I am so excited about! We finally packed it in and raced to the car in the rain and parted for home. I wanna thank my dear friends for helping make the evening a dream , especially my sweet Max who is endlessly supportive and helpful beyond words.

The Beautiful Birthday Dress!!!

The beautiful Katarina Silva recently bought this lovely dress from me. This dress is just one of those very special dresses you come across sometimes that just has magic in it. I originally bought this lovely Gunne Sax Dress from my wonderful friend Sasha over at Astral Boutique(See blog and shop listed in my blog favs) to wear on my birthday in Big Sur, California last fall and decided to let someone else try on its magic and now it has found its home with Katarina. She is an amazing photographer (check out her blog, it is listed in my blog favs Lanscapes of My Soul) and honored me with a photo of her in the wonderful piece. Thanks so much Katarina! Certain Ladies~

There are certain dresses and certain ladies that remind me of a time when ladies wore hats and gloves and purses that match and drank Rye and were skilled in the art of repartee. It is a time I actually long for quite often and when I do, I get out the the real stockings with garter belt and throw on a lovely dress, just like the ones that I found recently for my shop. When I am wearing these dresses I am immediately transported to a dining car on the Orient Express, or laughing at some witty joke I just told sitting in the lobby of the Algonquin Hotel, or sipping dry martinis with my man at The Brown Derby. Sure, these are fantasies , but they help soothe the speed of the modern world and inspire me to even sometimes get out the type writer and work on a poem or story. These dresses are stories in themselves. That is what I love about real vintage clothing; it has a history and a story to it...what happened in these frocks? Your guess is a as good as mine, but one can certainly put one of these beauties on and continue the story, in ones own life and in the wonderful world of the imagination.

And for goodness sakes, don't forget to read your Dorothy Parker!!

This collection is like the poppies blooming all over my yard right now, just bursting forth with color and natural beauty. As I got home and was looking at the photos, I suddenly got Joni Mitchell singing her song Woodstock in my head and realized that clothes always express a certain feeling for me and this collection certainly evokes for me the idea that we must get back to the garden, even if just for a few moments each day, for there is the place that we reconnect with our true selves as well as to nature and its spirit. I truly believe that nature is the great healer and in remembering and celebrating our inner connectedness to that we may not only heal ourselves but our amazing planet as well.

Channeling the Inner Goddess

Every woman is a goddess whether she is aware of this or not. There are many days where I wake up and need to channel the goddess within and so I go to the part of my closet where all of the goddess dresses are hanging. I kid you not~ Sometimes I want to channel the simple beauty of ancient greece and the strength of Aphrodite or Artemis or Athena, sometimes it is the women of magic such as Circe or a very modern Anita Pallenberg and sometimes it is a goddess of the silver screen such as Marilyn Monroe or Jayne Mansfield. All woman have their own innate magic and that comes through not only in the clothes they wear but the way they move and the way they choose to personally adorn themselves. The goddess within also gives us the power to create and live out our dreams and fantasies. Maybe we can all choose one day a week to be the goddess within, to let her out whoever she may be and allow her the space to follow her dreams~

Springtime in Eldora, Colorado

My sweet Max and I went up to Eldora, Colorado yesterday to visit one of his close friends' since childhood, Dechen Hawk. Dechen just moved to the sweetest little cabin up there to get away from the hustle and bustle so he could concentrate on his sweet soul music. Eldora has a nearby ski resort in the winter, but now the town is a cluster of cabins in the wilderness without any store or business of any kind whatsoever. It is the place you go to "get away" for sure! I had two dresses for the shop to photograph that were just so perfect for this kind of setting, so we had a wonderful day of visiting with dear friends, hiking and a little business thrown in as well.

The island's beauty, warmth, culture, style, music and spirituality is an inspiration to us all and has influenced the world in so many ways, for one, to stand up for the rights of all oppressed people and cultures and see through the distorted lens of the west and its agenda of power and money. The fact that this tiny island in the Caribbean has had such a direct cultural and political influence on the entire world show the enormity of it's heart and spirit. The Inimitable Hanna Shygulla****

I was inspired to do a blog on the wonderful German actress Hanna Shygulla after I came across a Suit that reminded me of the stars of the German screen(see my first posts Grand Opening). Hanna is one of my absolutely favorite actresses, along with having had a tremendous influence on my own style as well. She was a leading icon of the German Cinema of the 1960s and 1970s, mainly known for appearing in 23 of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's films including his first feature, "Love is Colder than Death". She is most remembered for her roles in the Fassbinder films, "The Marriage of Maria Braun", "Lili Marlene" and his masterpiece "Berlin Alexanderplatz". She is sometimes compared to Marlene Dietrich, but for me she has a much more human quality than Dietrich, an earthiness underneath the cool, unobtainable blonde. One feels that you could actually talk to her and maybe even become friends. (hahahaha) There seems to be a light emanating from her that makes everything and everyone around her recede into the background and she is all that exist for the moment that she is onscreen and one simply cannot take one's eyes off of her. Everything seems to come so naturally for her and for me she is the ideal women, the women I too want to be. Effortless and present, yet distant and dreamy at the same time. She is human and ethereal and more of what I want my screen goddesses to be. Definitely more than any modern actress or for that matter, American actress. It is also an interesting note that Fassbinder treated her with much kindness and tenderness , when he was notorious for terrorizing, manipulating and sleeping with almost all of his other leading actors. It speaks volumes to me of the kind of respect and love this woman demands and deserves. Here's to you Hanna Shygulla, with love~
